LG Electronics to Include Infineon ToF Sensor in Its 2019 Strategic Smartphone, the G8

LG Electronics announced on the 7th that its new strategic smartphone, the LG G8 ThinQ, will be equipped with a cutting-edge 3D sensor using the ToF (Time of Flight) method.

The ToF sensor that LG Electronics is installing in its new product is supplied by Infineon Technologies. Infineon is a German semiconductor and sensor solutions company with sales of KRW 9.7 trillion in 2018.
ToF is a technology that calculates distance by measuring the time it takes for a light source sent toward a subject to reflect and return. When combined with a camera, it can express objects in three dimensions.
In particular, the process of recognizing objects in 3D is simple and is not affected by external light, so the recognition rate is excellent even outdoors, making it advantageous for implementing AR and VR.
It has a high usability because its response speed is fast enough to be used for various biometric authentications such as facial recognition.
LG Electronics is focusing on improving the usability of its smartphones by installing a ToF sensor on the front of the LG G8 ThinQ that precisely displays objects in 3D.
For example, when a customer takes a selfie with the LG G8 ThinQ, a more natural out-of-focus effect can be achieved.
This is because the moment a customer takes a photo, the ToF sensor calculates the distance to the subject and clearly distinguishes between a nearby person and a distant background.
Going forward, LG Electronics plans to leverage the advantages of the ToF sensor to continuously develop new features and provide new value to smartphone users.
LG Electronics will reveal detailed specifications of the LG G8 ThinQ to the public at MWC 2019, the world's largest mobile exhibition held in Barcelona, Spain for four days starting on the 25th.
“The LG G8 ThinQ will be a great choice for customers who want a premium phone with excellent camera features,” said Ma Chang-min, executive vice president and head of LG Electronics’ MC product strategy group.
