IoT devices and smart lighting require a new generation of LED drivers.

Infineon Technologies announced on the 14th that it has launched the XDP LED driver series XDPL8221, which includes advanced features as a cost-effective dual-stage driver product.
The XDPL8221 combines a quasi-resonant PFC and a quasi-resonant flyback controller and includes primary-side regulation and a communication interface. Additionally, it is a safe, reliable, and robust LED driver suitable for various applications, featuring multiple configurable protection functions.

As a configurable operating parameter, the XDPL8221 is a multi-functional, high-performance LED driver featuring various control functions such as constant voltage, constant current, and power limiting.

This driver IC can operate perfectly with both AC and DC inputs, and the nominal input voltage range is 100VAC to 277VAC or 127VDC to 430VDC. By incorporating digital control, it selects the most suitable operating mode depending on the situation. It can switch between quasi-resonance, discontinuous conduction, and dynamic burst modes.

The XDPL8221 uses a UART interface and command set to control functions and provide status information. Through this interface, data can be exchanged in real time, and this data can be used for monitoring or additional control.

This driver IC can dim without flickering by less than 1% while regulating current with high accuracy. Additionally, this chip can dim in an off state, switching to standby mode when the light is off to consume low standby power. Depending on the driver design, power consumption can be as low as 100mW.

By reducing the Bill of Materials (BOM) and increasing flexibility, overall system costs can be minimized. The XDPL8221 is available as a DSO-16 package and supports various tools, making design work easier. Consequently, time-to-market can be shortened.
