Samsung Electronics announced on the 14th the mass production of '12 gigabyte (GB) LPDDR4X (Low Power Double Data Rate 4X) mobile DRAM'.
The 12GB LPDDR4X mobile DRAM is a product that is equipped with six 2nd generation 10nm-class (1y) 16-gigabit (Gb) chips. It has achieved the largest capacity ever by increasing the capacity by 1.5 times compared to the existing '8GB mobile DRAM'. This enables the application of a DRAM package with a higher capacity than the 8GB DRAM module equipped in a typical ultra-slim notebook to mobile devices. This allows for smoother use of various applications on ultra-high-resolution smartphones with screens more than twice as large, such as foldables.

Mobile companies are introducing features like five or more camera modules, large/multi-display displays, AI processors, and 5G services into next-generation smartphones. Equipping these high-end smartphones with higher-capacity DRAM can significantly improve system performance.

By implementing a large capacity of 12GB in a single package, power consumption efficiency can be increased and the battery mounting area can be expanded. The 12GB LPDDR4X mobile DRAM can read and write data at a speed of 34.1GB per second, the fastest speed currently used in mobile devices, and its package thickness of just 1.1mm allows for thinner mobile device designs.

“With the full-scale mass production of 12GB mobile DRAM, we have become the only company in the industry to supply the entire memory lineup required for next-generation flagship smartphones,” said Jeon Se-won, Vice President of Marketing at Samsung Electronics’ Memory Business Division. “We will continue to expand production in Pyeongtaek to meet the growing demand for DRAM from customers and strengthen our position in the premium mobile market.”

Samsung Electronics plans to begin mass production of 12GB mobile DRAM this month and more than triple the supply of its high-capacity mobile DRAM lineup of 8GB or more in the second half of the year to actively respond to the growing demand for premium memory from global IT customers.
