Samsung Electronics Demonstrates 8K Broadcasting Using Existing Equipment in Europe

On the 15th, Samsung Electronics conducted the first 8K satellite broadcast transmission and reception demonstration in Europe in Luxembourg together with European satellite broadcaster SES Astra.
This demonstration was conducted by transmitting 8K ultra-high-definition video over SES Astra's satellite network and receiving and broadcasting it on a 'QLED 8K' TV.
This method is significant in that it utilizes existing satellite broadcasting transmission equipment, receiving dish antennas, and the built-in tuner in QLED 8K TVs without the need for additional separate equipment for 8K broadcasting.
The receiver built into the QLED TV natively supports 'DVB-S2', a transmission standard currently widely used for HD and 4K UHD satellite broadcasting in Europe, Korea, and other regions.
Samsung Electronics anticipates that if this method is fully adopted in the future, the cost of building 8K broadcasting infrastructure will be significantly reduced.
In addition, Samsung Electronics and SES Astra compressed the video using a High Efficiency Video Codec for 8K video transmission.
Used in this demonstrationThe 8K content features High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology, which expands the dynamic range by making bright areas brighter and dark areas darker, just like what the human eye sees, and was produced at 50fps.
"This broadcast demonstration is a groundbreaking example that can reduce the cost burden for participating companies, including TV manufacturers, broadcasters, and set-top box manufacturers, by utilizing the existing satellite broadcasting environment as is," said Cheon Kang-wook, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business. "We will continue to do our best to accelerate the era in which consumers can enjoy 8K ultra-high-definition content."

Samsung Electronics sets out to dominate the '8K TV' market with "QLED 8K" technology
삼성전자가 TV 시장 전망과 2019년형 삼성 QLED 8K 핵심 기술 설명회를 열고 본격적인 8K TV 시장 선점에 나섰다고 밝혔다. 삼성전자는 12일 유럽을 시작으로 서남아, 중남미, n중동 등 각 지역별로 개최되는 거래선 초청 행사인 삼성포럼을 통해 2019년형 QLED 8K TV를 전격 공개하고 본격적인 판매에 돌입한다. 올해 선보이는 QLED 8K는 기존 65·75·82·85형에 98형과 55형을 추가한 총 6개 모델로 운영된다.

"A Game Changer Appears" LG U+ Counts Down to Domestic Launch of Cloud Gaming Service 'GeForce Now'
LG유플러스가 엔비디아의 클라우드 게임 서비스 지포스 나우를 국내에 단독 출시할 예정이라고 밝혔다. 지포스 나우는 엔비디아의 클라우드 게임 서비스로, 국내에서도 인기가 높은 포트 나이트, 리그 오브 레전드 등 500여종의 게임을 클라우드로 즐길 수 있다. 엔비디아는 이미 2년 여 동안 지포스 나우를 미국, 영국 등 북미와 서유럽의 30만 고객을 대상으로 베타 서비스를 진행, 전 세계 클라우드 게임 분야에서 가장 앞선 것으로 평가 받고 있다. 지포스 나우가 출시되면 게임 사용자들은 PC방에서 즐기던 500여종의 고 사양 게임을 5G 스마트폰과 집에 있는 PC, IPTV로 자유롭게 즐길 수 있다. 게임이 클라우드 상에 있기 때문에 다운로드에 몇 시간이 걸리던 게임도 몇 초 안에 로딩 하여 바로 게임을 즐길 수 있고, 패치나 업데이트도 신경 쓸 필요가 없다.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
