8K Ecosystem Experts Gather to Discuss Latest Technology Status

Samsung Electronics held the '8K Display Summit' event in Manhattan, New York, on the 11th (local time) and set out to make 8K mainstream. Samsung Electronics presented the latest 8K technology trends and roadmap at this event.

This event, co-hosted by Samsung Electronics and the U.S. research firm Insight Media, was attended by over 100 industry experts, including display equipment manufacturers, video production companies, and tech media outlets.

The event was conducted in three main sessions: 8K technology and market status, 8K content ecosystem, and 8K advanced technology. Experts across all sectors of the 8K ecosystem shared the latest status of 8K-related technologies from various angles and discussed future prospects.

Industry experts showed great interest in foundational 8K technologies, such as HDR10+ technology, which optimizes brightness and contrast ratio for every scene to make bright areas brighter and dark areas darker; 5G; video compression codec technology, which minimizes image quality loss while reducing the size of video data; and AI upscaling technology, which converts low-resolution video into high-resolution video by continuously learning the differences between low and high resolutions based on machine learning algorithms, analyzing correlations, and compensating for deficiencies. They predicted that these technologies would lead the growth of the 8K ecosystem in the future.

At the event, Samsung Electronics also revealed the progress and future plans of the 8K Association, which was launched at the NAB broadcast equipment trade show in the U.S. last April and has been active ever since.

The 8K Consortium is currently operating centered around TV manufacturers such as Samsung, Panasonic, TCL, Hisense, and AUO, but has announced plans to expand the 8K ecosystem by focusing on laying the foundation for 8K standardization in the future.

Sonia Chen, Head of Display at Samsung Electronics America, predicted, “As 5G becomes commercialized and high-efficiency video compression technology advances, enabling ultra-high-definition broadcasting and video transmission, the 8K market will grow exponentially,” adding, “8K will be particularly popular among the Millennial generation, who search and communicate through video.”

Professor Park Young-kyung, Director of the Color Design Research Institute at Ewha Womans University, drew the attention of the attendees by presenting the difference in viewing experience provided by 8K, based on experimental results showing that the ability to comprehensively perceive objects increases when watching ultra-high-resolution video of 8K or higher.

Chris Chinnock, CEO of Insight Media, said, “8K is not a technology of the distant future, but is already close to us after sufficient research and development,” adding, “We are rapidly overcoming some concerns about the lack of 8K content through industry collaboration and advancements in related technologies.”

Lee Hyo-gun, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business, said, “The ultimate viewing experience demonstrated by 8K ultra-high definition ultimately comes from consumers He said, “It will be chosen,” adding, “I am confident that 8K TVs will establish themselves as the mainstream.”
