IBM Provides Technical Advisory for Daejeon Smart City Challenge Project

IBM is participating in the Daejeon Smart City Challenge project as a technical advisor.

Daejeon Metropolitan City announced on the 9th that IBM will provide technical advice in the field of data architecture to build the 'Smart City Challenge'.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Smart City Challenge project aims to support the discovery of business models that solve urban problems using smart city technology, and Daejeon City is demonstrating shared parking, electrical fire prevention, senior safety care, fine dust precision measurement, autonomous navigation drones, and smart city urban frame technologies at Daejeon Central Market in Dong-gu, Daejeon.

Rianne van Veldhuizen, Executive Vice President of Commercial Business at IBM Asia Pacific, visited Daejeon City Hall and signed an agreement with Daejeon Mayor Huh Tae-jung to provide solutions and technical consulting for the construction of the 'Data Hub,' a core infrastructure for the Smart City Challenge project, and discussed specific plans.

IBM has experience carrying out over 2,000 smart city projects worldwide, and in particular, the Smart City Challenge organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and TransportWe provided advanced data analysis and operation services for the 'Smart Columbus Experience Center' to the challenge project in Columbus, USA, which is the reference model for this project.

Daejeon City and IBM will analyze various administrative systems and challenge demonstration service models by November of this year to establish a strategic plan for building a data hub. They will also conduct analysis of structured and unstructured data through IBM's AI content analysis platforms, 'Watson Explorer' and 'DB2'.

Daejeon Mayor Heo Tae-jeong said, “In order for Daejeon to realize the achievements of the Special City of the 4th Industrial Revolution, smart city projects must play a leading role,” adding, “With this agreement as an opportunity, we will strive to build even more advanced smart city capabilities by adding IBM’s smart city technology and experience.”

Vice President Ryan stated, “We will actively support Daejeon City in pursuing a competitive smart city by combining Daejeon City’s capabilities with IBM’s technology and experience.”

In May, Daejeon City was selected for the first phase of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's 'Smart City Challenge' and received 1.5 billion won in state funding. The city plans to prepare for the second phase evaluation by carrying out demonstration projects and detailed planning by the end of the year together with 10 local companies, including CNCITY Energy and Yeonmu Technology.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to select and support six sites for the first phase of the Smart City Challenge this year, including Daejeon, and then evaluate their performance to support one or two sites for the second phase of expansion starting next year with a budget of approximately 24 billion won.
