A linear regulator using a switched capacitor architecture has been released.

Texas Instruments (TI) announced on the 31st that it has released a smart AC/DC linear regulator, the 'TPS7A78'.

The newly unveiled smart AC/DC linear regulator delivers 75% higher efficiency and twice the power density compared to competing products, achieving a balance of ultra-low noise and high efficiency while reducing power supply size.

The TPS7A78 linear regulator uses a proprietary switched-capacitor architecture that eliminates the need for separate components, including external inductors and transformers, thereby minimizing the size of circuit breakers and interrupters.

It is particularly suitable for tamper-resistant designs in applications including electricity metering in power grid infrastructure and building automation.

The TPS7A78 non-isolated linear regulator converts AC to DC power at up to 0.5 W using smaller components and fewer components.

The smart design of the TPS7A78 is an active bridge, switch Designs can be optimized with capacitors and low-dropout (LDO) regulators.

In particular, it achieves higher efficiency compared to traditional capacitor drop solutions using Zener diodes and also reduces the size of the capacitor.

The TPS7A78 regulates the input voltage through a unique dynamic active bridge clamp, reducing standby power to 10mW, 75% lower than traditional capacitor-drop solutions.

Using a switched-capacitor architecture, the TPS7A78 eliminates up to 26 external components, including bridge rectifiers, and provides a capacitor size approximately 25% smaller than traditional capacitor-drop solutions.

The TPS7A78 meets the IEC 61000-4-8 standard required for applications such as electricity metering, eliminating the need for expensive magnetic shielding.

The TPS7A78, housed in a 14-pin 5 mm x 6.5 mm TSSOP package, is currently available through the TI store and authorized distributors. Pricing starts at $1.00 in quantities of 1,000.
