Implementation of a 30 billion KRW pilot project for expanded autonomous execution involving four relevant ministries
Development of autonomous driving foundational and source technologies led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Science and ICT

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Science and ICT held a kick-off event for the Autonomous Driving Fast-Track Project Technology Council to promote close collaboration in the field of autonomous driving.

To ensure the smooth operation of the technology consultative body and to strengthen cooperation among related organizations, a business agreement was also signed involving eight institutions, including the Korea Institute of Information and Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation and the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology Evaluation and Management.
The Autonomous Driving Fast Track project is currently conducting a preliminary feasibility study for a multi-agency technology development project from 2021 to 2027 with the participation of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the National Police Agency, prior to the full-scale implementation of the autonomous driving technology development innovation project being planned and promoted by all government ministries.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy plans to develop AI-based computing technology and vehicle control solutions for autonomous vehicles, demonstrate the technology, and derive domestic and international standards based on support worth 17.1 billion won by 2021. Led by Hyundai Mobis, 23 organizations including the Korea Automotive Parts Research Institute, Infobank, and the Korean Standards Association will participate.The Ministry of Science and ICT will also invest 11.8 billion won by 2021 to develop SW solutions that enable stable driving even in unstructured driving environments, as well as simulation software for verifying autonomous driving functions, with the Korea Road Intelligent Automotive Parts Promotion Agency as the overall manager and eight institutions including the Electronics Technology Institute participating.
At this Autonomous Vehicle Technology Consultative Meeting, plans to link technology development achievements between the two ministries' Fast Track projects and the direction for promoting inter-ministerial autonomous driving technology development were discussed.
On this day, Choi Nam-ho, Director General of Manufacturing Industry Policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, stated, “It is a time when national support and bold private investment for future vehicles are needed,” and urged for organic collaboration among stakeholders, adding, “I hope that this technology consultative body will serve as a central hub to accelerate technological cooperation and convergence between the automotive and ICT industries in the field of autonomous driving.”

In addition, Kim Jung-won, Director General of Internet Convergence Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “Autonomous driving is a culmination of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies and is a field where convergence between different industries is essential,” adding, “I believe it is a field where no single ministry can, nor should, do everything.” "Inter-agency cooperation must be emphasized above all else," he said, expressing his determination to make further efforts to strengthen collaboration related to autonomous driving.
