The government announced in June that it would promote AI-based industrial intelligence across the manufacturing industry as part of its manufacturing renaissance strategy, drawing industry attention to the construction of intelligent factories.
On the 2nd, the Korea Smart Manufacturing Industry Association (KOSMIA) held its first 'AI Factory Conference 2019' on the topic of AI-based industrial intelligence at COEX in Samseong-dong, Seoul.
Hosted and organized by KOSMIA, Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI), and COEX, and sponsored by Microsoft, this event brought together well over 200 attendees to discover and share insights on cases and technologies utilizing big data and AI across industries.

In his opening remarks, KOSMIA President Kim Tae-hwan said, “In order to fully implement a smart factory, we must be able to collect the necessary data at the necessary time and apply the acquired data to work to create value.” He added, “Companies must secure talent and capabilities that know how to utilize not only newly collected data but also existing accumulated data.”He emphasized, “We must do this.”
Next, ▲Microsoft's Senior Attorney Chan Yoon gave a keynote speech on 'The Engine of Smart Industry, Cloud and AI', ▲Korea Association President Tae-Hwan Kim, who gave the opening remarks, gave a keynote speech on 'Hyundai Heavy Industries Manufacturing Intelligence Case', and ▲KETI Center Director Byeong-Hoon Song gave a keynote speech on 'The Future Role of Demo Factories, a Platform for Industrial Intelligence'.
In the afternoon track, △DS-eTrade's Managing Director Kang Hee-jae presented on 'Utilization of Cloud-based Big Data and AI Platforms', △Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute's Director Kim Won-jong presented on 'Development of AI Framework for Knowledge Base-based Smart Factories', △Yura's Manager Lee Sang-hyeon presented on 'Case of Building Smart Factories in the Automotive Parts Industry Based on Big Data', △Hyundai Steel's Deputy Manager Lee Jeong-han presented on 'Case of AI Utilization in the Steel Industry', and Seyoon C&S's Director Lee Myeong-su presented on 'Case of Intelligent Disaster Prevention through AI-based Diffusion Prediction Model'.
Meanwhile, this event served as a pre-event for the 2020 Smart Factory + Automation World 2019. A KOSMIA representative stated, "The association plans to continue developing activities to build a domestic smart manufacturing ecosystem."

Young job seekers experience smart factories and find jobs!
The Ministry of SMEs and Startups is recruiting companies and young job seekers to participate in the Smart Factory Construction Enterprise Youth Experience Program, which allows young job seekers to gain hands-on work experience at smart factory construction companies with relatively favorable working conditions. The program matches young job seekers with smart factory construction companies, conducts job-specific training for up to two days, and then provides up to three months of on-site work experience at the company. Participating companies receive a monthly training allowance of 600,000 won per participant, with support for up to three participants per company.

KETI Localizes Autonomous Driving LiDAR Sensors for Unmanned Transport Robots
KETI has succeeded in localizing a scanning lidar sensor for SLAM used in autonomous navigation of smart factory autonomous mobile robots. In the past, AGVs operated using a traditional SLAM method that recognized artificial markings such as optical recognition metal wires or magnetic lines attached to the floor and traveled along predetermined paths. Recently, AGVs using autonomous navigation methods that recognize position using lidar without separate markings and further create and utilize surrounding maps have become commonplace. Until now, scanning lidar sensors for SLAM had to rely on Japanese and German products priced around 2 to 3 million won. The scanning lidar sensor for autonomous navigation of unmanned mobile robots developed by KETI this time is capable of 180° detection and can detect objects as small as 10cm at a maximum distance of 30m.

Smart Factories Are the Trend This Year! SME Technology Innovation Fair Held
The 2019 Small and Medium Enterprise Technology Innovation Expo will be held for four days from the 26th to the 28th at Hall C on the 3rd floor of COEX in Gangnam. Marking its 20th edition this year, the event has evolved beyond a product-oriented exhibition framework to become a technology expo that presents the latest trends and direction of technological innovation by selecting 'Smart Factory' as its technology theme. The exhibition consists of a total of 7 halls and 260 booths organized by subject. In the 'Innovation Platform Hall,' alongside various technologies that comprise Smart Factory such as robots, sensors and communications, data, and AI, a demonstration of an advanced Smart Factory solution will be conducted that connects a manufacturing facility in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk with the exhibition venue to remotely control manufacturing processes in real time. An InoTech IR Co-prosperity Conference will be held at 10 a.m. on the 27th.

ST Microelectronics and NUS Establish Joint Research Center 'HELIX' for Edge AI
ST Microelectronics and the National University of Singapore have established the 'HELIX' joint research center aimed at implementing embedded AI in edge environments. Over a four-year period, the center will conduct research across the entire technology stack from algorithms to silicon, focusing on memory-centric architecture leveraging ST's 18nm FD-SOI technology and embedded PCM. The core objective is to implement intelligence directly in physical devices such as robots and drones while minimizing energy consumption.

Ecolab and K-water Discuss Innovation Collaboration in Advanced Industry Water Management
Ecolab and the Korea Water Resources Corporation jointly discussed cooperation directions for maximizing water use efficiency in advanced industries such as semiconductors and data centers and establishing sustainable water circulation. The two companies agreed to gradually develop a long-term cooperation model that combines water resource infrastructure and water management technology to promote water efficiency optimization, water reuse, and carbon reduction.
