South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT and the UK's Department for Digital Culture
Joint development of 5G-based realistic content services
A six-day project launch workshop was held in Daejeon.


South Korea and the UK are developing AR/MR content that operates on 5G inside subways.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 5th that it will launch a joint Korean-UK international research project with the UK Department for Digital Culture, Media and Sport to develop 5G-based realistic content services in high-speed environments.

In relation to this, on the 6th, a joint research initiation workshop will be held at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in Daejeon with the attendance of approximately 50 people, including government officials and research participants from both countries.

This study was planned for approximately one year, following initial discussions at the 3rd Korea-UK ICT Policy Forum held in Seoul in February 2018.

As a result of the business announcement and research institution selection evaluation from February 2018, the ETRI-Dankook University-Willis Research Institute of Standards and Technology consortium was finally selected as the research institution in Korea, and the Cisco-Soluis Group-University of Strathclyde-Ampletime consortium was finally selected in August in the UK.

The joint research topic is 'High-speed train environment'5G ultra-high frequency wireless transmission and ultra-high-speed immersive media services'. Korea is focusing on 5G technology for real-time transmission of ultra-high-capacity information in subways, while the UK is focusing on ultra-high-speed AR/MR technology that can be operated on 5G networks.

The governments of both countries will each provide a total of 1.8 billion won in research funds to their respective consortiums over two years.

This research will lead to the establishment of a test bed in the Korean subway and the verification of AR/MR content developed in the UK.

To ensure successful research, the project launch workshop will discuss detailed research content, progress schedules, and cooperation plans between the two consortia. Researchers from both countries will also visit the subway site where the testbed will be built.

Jang Seok-young, Director of the Information and Communication Policy Bureau, said, “I hope that this joint Korea-UK international research will serve as an opportunity to lead the immersive content market in the 5G era,” and added, “We will also further expand technological and industrial exchanges between our two countries.”
