Samsung AI Forum Held...Sharing of Domestic and International Technology Research in 5G, IoT, and AI
President Koh Dong-jin "Presenting New Lifestyle to Lead the Future"


The 'Samsung AI Forum 2019,' organized by Samsung Research, was held on the 5th at Samsung Electronics' Seoul R&D Institute.
Koh Dong-jin, President of Samsung Electronics' IM Division, stated in his opening remarks, "In the hyper-connected era driven by 5G, AI, and IoT technologies, companies that innovate user experience will become global business winners," and continued, "5G and AI will serve as the foundation for technological convergence and innovation in smartphones, wearables, speakers, IoT, AR, VR, and other devices, becoming a turning point that presents a new lifestyle to our lives."

He further stated, "Samsung Electronics will lead the future at the forefront of 5G and AI innovation," and added, "As a company that has led technological innovation with a spirit of challenge transcending conventional thinking, Samsung Electronics will make a leap as an innovation company providing unprecedented new user experiences through continuous innovation and unique technological capabilities in the field of artificial intelligence."

He explained that Samsung Electronics has designated AI as one of four major future growth sectors and strengthened research capabilities, collaborating with seven global AI centers across five countries worldwide to continuously advance world-class AI technology.

In particular, he emphasized efforts in researching AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) technology that surpasses the limitations of existing AI technology by enabling machines to learn, judge, and make decisions autonomously, adding that when AGI technology with complex intelligence converges with various devices, it can provide even more groundbreaking user experiences.

On the second day of the forum, Professor Noah Smith from the University of Washington and Professor Abhinav Gupta from Carnegie Mellon University delivered keynote speeches.

Professor Noah Smith presented 'Rational Recurrences for Empirical Natural Language Processing' in his keynote address.

He explained vulnerabilities in existing deep learning models for natural language processing and introduced rational recurrent neural networks, a new model capable of linguistic understanding while enabling in-depth language processing.

Professor Abhinav Gupta presented on the theme 'Supersizing and Empowering Visual and Robot Learning,' proposing large-scale self-learning methods that transcend the limitations of existing supervised learning and sharing future agent application strategies.

In the afternoon, lectures on Vision & Image and On-Device, IoT & Social themes were held.

Additionally, a poster session was prepared to display excellent papers from domestic universities and graduate schools selected by major global academic conferences in the field of artificial intelligence.

Samsung Electronics plans to further accelerate the fostering of future growth industries through active networking with promising scholars worldwide.
