Specialized field training infrastructure capable of performing smart factory operation, design, coordination, and consulting… Testbed for performing smart factory training specialized in the industry-academia convergence zone


Smart Lab is a hands-on facility built to optimize smart factory solutions for smart factory education targeting university students and local small and medium-sized enterprise employees.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups announced on the 20th that it has additionally built a smart lab to foster integrated smart factory experts at the Gyeongnam Changwon Industry-Academia Convergence Center in the Gyeongnam Changwon Industry-Academia Convergence District.

This smart lab is part of the 'Smart Factory Professional Training Project' hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, with Gyeongsangnam-do and Changwon City bearing a portion of the project costs. It was established by the Changwon Industry-Academia Convergence Institute for the purpose of supporting on-site training for smart factory professionals. The total number of training targets is 500 people.

The Changwon Industry-Academia Convergence Center Smart Lab consists of a total of seven labs: the Main Smart Lab, Smart Sensor Lab, Smart Actuator Lab, Smart Control Lab, Smart Design Lab, and ICT/IOT Automation Lab, in conjunction with Changwon Industrial Complex’s specialized fields of intelligent machinery, defense, precision machinery, and mechatronics.

In particular, the 'Main Smart Lab' was built to enable hands-on training in the entire process of parts processing and assembly using processing machines, ▲automated processes using various robots, ▲production management using MES/POP systems, ▲digitalization of facilities and production prediction management using CPS, etc.

In addition, in the 'Smart Control Lab', you can learn how to △ build a real-time linkage system with sensors and actuators to respond to equipment malfunctions, △ link with smart tablets and utilize measurement data to suggest optimized production conditions, etc.

Kim Woo-soon, director of the Technology Policy Division at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, said, “With the establishment of the Smart Lab in Changwon, not only will trainees be able to receive integrated training in designing, operating, and managing smart factories, but local SMEs will also be able to produce prototypes and develop products jointly with participating universities.”

He also said, “The Ministry of SMEs and Startups will continue to play a leading role in smart manufacturing innovation for small and medium-sized enterprises, along with providing human resources for smart factories.”

Meanwhile, the smart lab in the Gyeonggi Industry-Academia Convergence District of Korea University of Technology and Education was completed on October 16. The total number of students targeted for education is 450.
