ST Completes Acquisition of Norstel AB… Strengthening SiC Wafer Production Capabilities

STMicroelectronics announced on the 9th that it has completed the acquisition of Norstel AB, a Swedish silicon carbide (SiC) wafer manufacturer.
ST exercised its option to acquire the remaining 45% stake following the initial stake acquisition announced in February 2019. The acquisition of Nostel cost approximately $137.5 million, and the funds were paid with available cash.
"With the completion of the acquisition of Norstel, ST is now able to effectively control SiC wafer yield and quality," said Jean-Marc Chery, Chairman and CEO of ST. "This acquisition adds to wafer supply contracts signed with other partners."
At the same time, they stated, “We have been able to stably secure wafers of the grade required for the production of automotive and industrial MOSFETs and diodes, for which demand is expected to increase in the future.”
Nostel is fully integrated into ST's global R&D and manufacturing facilities.
In addition to the production of 150mm bare and epitaxial SiC wafers and 200mm wafers, R&D projects regarding Wide-BandGap (WBG) materials are also scheduled to continue.
