Maxim Launches MAX20340 Bidirectional DC PLC IC
Power supply and communication functions performed with a single line
Pins and components used for communication between low-power products


Demand for small devices is growing in the wearables sector, including wireless earphones.

Maxim Integrated released the bidirectional DC powerline communication (PLC) IC 'MAX20340' on the 8th.

Designers of low-power portable devices and wearables can use the MAX20340 to reduce the size of the power communication and interface connecting to the charger.

The MAX20340 performs both power and communication functions over a single wire, eliminating the pins and discrete components typically required for communication between low-power devices such as charging docks, wireless earbuds, and small wearables.

Compared to competing solutions, the design process is also simpler. It's also 80% smaller, saving 13mm2 of space per earbud. Each IC measures just 1.84mm2 and requires no bulky external components such as inductors.

Maxim's ultra-small PLC communication chips minimize the physical contact points for charging and communication interfaces, enabling communication and power transmission over the same wire. This reduces costs and increases product reliability by reducing the potential for failure.

The MAX20340 features automatic object detection, increasing design flexibility and eliminating the need for expensive and unreliable components like pogo pins and Hall-effect sensors.

Master/slave configuration can also be accomplished via a single external register. Various operating modes allow for minimizing power consumption depending on the application. Simple mailbox communication for read/write functions can be performed via the I2C interface.
