TI Adds Linear Thermistor to Temperature Sensing Product Family
50% better accuracy compared to conventional NTC thermistors
Can be placed close to the hot spot at 1/10 the size of comparable models.


Texas Instruments (TI) announced on the 18th that it is adding linear thermistor products to its temperature sensing product line that are up to 50% more accurate than existing NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistors.

The new linear thermistor products enable accurate thermal measurement even at temperatures above 80°C.

NTC thermistors have low sensitivity at extreme temperatures and high resistance tolerances, which reduces accuracy when measuring temperature. To compensate for this problem, engineers calibrate across three temperature ranges or use multiple thermistors to monitor each temperature range. Even with this method, accurate temperature measurement is difficult, and the system may shut down before reaching the accurate thermal limit.

TI's linear thermistors offer excellent linearity and accuracy, and enable single-point calibration, maximizing system performance and simplifying design. With a low rated drift of 0.5%, they also enhance the reliability of temperature measurements.

Engineers can easily calculate temperature resistance values by using TI's thermistor design tools provided on the thermistor product page and data sheets provided on TI.com, as well as accelerate design using example conversion techniques and code.

TI's linear thermistors eliminate the need for additional linearization circuitry or multiple NTC thermistors, thereby simplifying design, lowering system costs, and reducing PCB layout size by at least 33% compared to NTC thermistors.

Since it is only 1/10 the size of a silicon-based linear thermistor of the same class, it can be placed closer to the hot spot, enabling faster response speed and consistent temperature measurement.

TI's new thermistor portfolio includes the TMP61, TMP63, and TMP64, which are available for purchase through TI and authorized distributors. They are offered in through-hole packaging and surface-mount 0402 and 0603 footprint options. Pricing starts at $0.05 per 1,000 units.
