Power Integrations announced on the 11th an expanded family of InnoSwitch™ 3 offline CV/CC flyback switcher ICs.

The new INN3x78C device integrates 'size 8' 750V PowiGaN™ transistors, enabling the manufacture of 27–55W power supplies without heatsinks. This IC family is part of a broader range of GaN-based InnoSwitch 3 products targeting up to 120W, and is available in an InSOP™-24D package.

PowiGaN technology exhibits an efficiency of up to 94% across the line and load. It is robust and can withstand line surges and swelling that typically occur in regions where the main voltage is unstable. This allows OEMs to specify a single power supply design for use worldwide.

Suitable applications include set-top boxes, displays, networking and gaming products and devices that want to comply with European energy labeling regulations, as well as USB PD and high-current chargers/adapters for mobile devices.

Chris Lee, Product Marketing Director at Power Integrations, said, “It is difficult to achieve both electrical strength and efficiency simultaneously due to the relationship between silicon MOSFET breakdown voltage and COSS-related switching losses,” adding, “PowiGaN transistors have low COSS, showing over 94% efficiency in tropical markets and can reduce market failure rates.”

The new InnoSwitch 3 IC products are currently on sale, and in units of 10,000, the price is $2.95 per unit for InnoSwitch 3-CP and InnoSwitch 3-EP, and $3.25 per unit for InnoSwitch 3-Pro.
