Ministry of Science and ICT Holds Joint Task Force Meeting with Mobile Carriers and Terminal & Equipment Manufacturers
Improvement of service reception environment and increased deployment of mid-to-low-priced 5G phones and base stations

The government and related industries have joined forces to improve reception environments and promote the expansion of usage with the goal of providing the highest quality 5G services.
On the 11th, the Ministry of Science and ICT held a meeting of the public-private joint task force to inspect 5G services at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry with mobile carriers and terminal and equipment manufacturers.

It was found that the number of 5th generation mobile communication base stations has increased threefold from 35,851 at the time of commercialization last year (based on completion reports in April 2019) to 108,897 (based on completion reports as of February 28, 2020), and that 5G usage conditions are gradually improving with the launch of youth plans in the 40,000 won range and budget phone plans in the 30,000 won range.

As of the end of last January, the number of 5G service users was estimated at approximately 4.96 million.

Telecommunications operators plan to continue making efforts to improve service reception environments targeting major highways, railway stations, large shopping malls, and subways, while terminal manufacturers plan to launch mid-to-low-priced 5G smartphones to expand the use of 5G services, and equipment manufacturers plan to supply equipment in accordance with the mobile carriers' base station construction schedules.

An official from the Ministry of Science and ICT said“We will continue to provide the highest quality 5G services to the public through close cooperation between the public and private sectors,” they stated, adding, “We will do our best, including conducting 5G telecommunications service quality evaluations starting this year.”
