STMicroelectronics announced on the 25th that its STUSB4500L USB-C controller IC has been certified for 5V sink-only applications.

The STUSB4500L integrates all the essential features required to use the USB-C connector as a 5V universal power plug, enabling designers to easily implement USB-C charging solutions without the burden of standards or code writing.

This standalone plug-and-play interface product is ideal for low-voltage applications such as Bluetooth speakers, computer accessories, Wi-Fi access points, point-of-sale (POS) equipment, LED lighting, and USB dongles. It can also be used to power equipment such as single-board computers and hardware development kits.

The STUSB4500L is automatically powered via the VBUS of the connected source, eliminating the need for a local battery or onboard power supply. Its zero leakage current prevents battery discharge even when not charging. Even if mistakenly connected to a 20V source such as a USB PD AC adapter instead of the required 5V power supply, the input overvoltage protection function prevents damage to low-voltage equipment.

It supports a "Dead-Battery" function that accurately identifies the source when the battery is completely discharged, and implements a cold socket, which keeps the VBUS switch open by default until a safe 5V input voltage is supplied. It also supports source power specification identification and error recovery functions to ensure a proper restart if a fault is triggered.

The STUSB4500L is currently in production and is available in a 4×4mm QFN-24 package or a 2.6×2.6mm CSP-25 chip-scale package, with pricing starting at $0.70 and $0.75, respectively, for orders of 1,000 pieces.

Additionally, the 2.5cm² EVAL-SCS002V1 reference design, which supports easy prototyping, is available for purchase through ST's Korean branch or distributors. A full PCB design library is provided to facilitate rapid implementation of proprietary designs and can be downloaded free of charge from st.com.
