Three Major Mobile Carriers Launch Mobile Phone Number Login Service

SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus announced on the 25th that they are launching a mobile phone number login service based on the identity verification app 'PASS'.

Pass is a smartphone app-based service that supports secure identity verification for customers by simplifying the identity verification process and enhancing security levels.

The three mobile carriers plan to enhance customer convenience through the launch of the Pass mobile number login service, while also expanding the service ecosystem through partnerships with various business sectors. Companies and organizations wishing to adopt the Pass mobile number login service can utilize it by integrating the API disclosed on the Developer Center website with their applications or through a partnership with the three mobile carriers.

Customers using a smartphone registered under their own name will be able to use services affiliated with Pass without entering a separate ID and password. If you select mobile phone number login on the service screen, the Pass app launches automatically, and you can connect by choosing between biometric authentication or a six-digit PIN.

An official explained that the Pass mobile phone number login service is as convenient as simple logins using social media accounts, and offers superior security as it is equipped with multiple security systems that perform identity and device authentication every time a user logs in. They also stated that the service was built through collaboration with the fintech security firm Aton.

In addition, Pass partners can enhance customer services based on data accumulated through the mobile phone login service. Each partner obtains the customer's consent for identity verification and information provision for the first time, and can subsequently update the customer's identity verification information when the customer logs in with their mobile phone number.

Meanwhile, in July 2018, the three major mobile carriers integrated their mobile app-based identity verification brands, which had been serviced under different names, into "PASS" and established partnerships with major domestic institutions and operators. The number of PASS subscribers has been steadily increasing since the brand integration. Prior to the integration, the total was around 14 million, but as of this past February, the number of subscribers exceeded 28 million.
