LG Uplus and GS EPS Sign 5G Smart Power Plant Agreement
5G dedicated network to be built at Dangjin Power Plant by the first half of the year

LG Uplus is accelerating its 5G B2B business.

LG Uplus announced on the 5th that it had signed a business agreement with GS EPS regarding the introduction of a 5G-based smart power plant solution.

A smart power plant refers to innovating the operation and management of power plant facilities, such as remote operation, equipment diagnosis, and logistics automation, based on 5G.

Workers can easily monitor every corner of the power plant complex, spanning hundreds of thousands of square meters, remotely without needing to visit each time, and various facilities can be diagnosed 24 hours a day using IoT. Necessary parts can also be transported automatically using robots.

The utility value of 5G increases in smart power plants. To remotely manage power plant facilities where safety is paramount, transmission (ultra-high speed) and response (ultra-low latency) speeds are crucial to enable real-time monitoring of on-site conditions via high-definition video and analysis of equipment status.

Big data is collected from numerous IoT devices (hyper-connected), including not only statistical data such as the power production of facilities but also safety and diagnostic information for preventing failures and accidents.

Under the agreement, the two companies plan to cooperate on: ▲ developing AR-based power facility data analysis and remote monitoring systems; ▲ providing IoT-based facility diagnostic solutions such as gas leak detection and motor diagnosis; and ▲ introducing autonomous robots for logistics automation.

First, LG Uplus will build a dedicated 5G network at the GS EPS Dangjin Power Plant in South Chungcheong Province by the first half of the year. A dedicated 5G network is a closed network separated from general commercial networks, ensuring high-quality network performance and guaranteeing network security for critical power generation facilities. In terms of cost, it reduces expenses by more than 50% compared to building and operating a wired network.

Once the construction of the 5G dedicated network is completed, we plan to conduct smart power plant demonstrations starting in the second half of the year, including IoT-based equipment diagnostic solutions and the operation of autonomous robots that transport parts between warehouses and power plants.
