SK T-AWS to Build a 5G Edge Cloud Ecosystem Within the Year

SK Telecom announced on the 13th that it plans to introduce an edge cloud service based on 5G Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) within this year through collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

At the AWS Summit Online Korea held on the 13th, SK Telecom MNO Business Division Head Yoo Young-sang said in his keynote speech, “We plan to build a 5G edge cloud ecosystem by integrating SK Telecom’s 5G MEC technology with public cloud technologies and services such as AWS Wavelength.”

AWS Wavelength is a service that builds computing and storage infrastructure at the edge of telecommunications companies' 5G networks, enabling developers to develop applications that require latency on the order of milliseconds.

5G Edge Cloud is a distributed cloud service that installs cloud data centers in exchange offices and base stations to process the rapidly increasing mobile data at the network edge, reducing the physical time and distance required for data processing.

Business Division Manager Yoo Young-sang said that 5G edge cloud with SK Telecom MEC technology can reduce communication delay time by up to 60% and provide cloud service to users on the move through handover technology.He explained that he was providing a service.

To this end, SK Telecom added that it will build MEC infrastructure in 12 key 5G hub areas across the country and provide shared edge services (public edge) used by multiple companies and on-site edge services dedicated to specific companies.

He explained that the company is already exploring cloud business models that combine 5G MEC with companies in fields such as machine vision, smart factories, cloud gaming, and high-definition medical image data.


SKT Takes Steps to Become an Integrated Cloud Provider
SK Telecom announced its plan to become an integrated cloud service provider that provides comprehensive services ranging from communications to cloud networks and security services.

In the future, SK Telecom plans to jointly develop a multi-hybrid cloud management platform by combining the technologies of SK Telecom, SK C&C, and SK Infosec based on Bespin Global's cloud management platform, 'OpsNow.'

The multi-hybrid cloud management platform leverages AI to provide real-time usage forecasting and cost optimization, helping customers who mix and match different cloud services manage their resources.

Additionally, SK Telecom plans to expand its influence in the cloud security market by expanding its cloud security products through linkage with SK Infosec's integrated control platform, 'Secudium'.
