Exploring Ways to Overcome COVID-19 Using AI
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 15th that the 'Global Partnership on AI (GPAI)' council, established to promote responsible AI development and application, has been officially launched.
GPAI is an international multi-stakeholder council that addresses various AI-related issues based on human rights, inclusivity, diversity, innovation, and economic growth. It was founded with a total of 14 founding members including South Korea (New Zealand, Germany, Mexico, United States, Slovenia, Singapore, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Canada, France, South Korea, Australia, and EU).
The founding members, along with the launch of this council, issued a joint declaration supporting the development and application of responsible and human-centric AI based on human rights, fundamental freedoms, and democratic values.
To realize the joint declaration, GPAI plans to operate expert groups on four topics—①Responsible AI, ②Data Governance, ③The Future of Work, and ④Innovation & Commercialization—with participation from experts across institutions, enterprises, civil society, and academia.
In the short term, plans are to form an expert group to explore ways of utilizing AI to overcome COVID-19 and conduct discussions.
South Korea will have ①Professor Oh Hye-yeon (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), ②Oh Sung-tak, Director (Korea Information Society Development Institute), ③Park Sung-won, Senior Research Fellow (National Assembly Future Institute), ④Kim Kyung-hoon, Center Director (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute), and Park Myung-soon, AI Business Unit Head (SK) participate as members of each expert group.
Minister Choi Ki-young of the Ministry of Science and ICT stated, "AI is a new technology leading the digital era, and thorough efforts are needed so that it can develop and be utilized in ways that benefit everyone. GPAI will be an opportunity for experts from each country to jointly explore practical measures for this," he added.

KT Joins AI Alliance, LG Electronics and U+ Join AI One Team
LG Electronics and LG Uplus concluded a business agreement to participate in the AI One Team at KT Gwanghwamun Building in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The AI One Team is an industry-academia-research collaborative body established to enhance the competitiveness of Korea's AI industry, which was launched in February this year by KT, Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings, KAIST, Hanyang University, and ETRI. Based on this agreement, LG Uplus and LG Electronics will develop core AI-related technologies and discover new business opportunities within the AI One Team.
