With the addition of new technologies such as 5G network connectivity and 4K video to portable devices, many products are transitioning from a single-cell to a two-cell serial architecture. Consequently, there is a growing demand for power delivery via USB Type-C and high-power charging of 25W or more.

Maxim Integrated Korea announced on the 12th the launch of two USB Type-C Power Delivery (PD) solutions, the 'MAX77958' and 'MAX77962'. Both products are suitable for gaming, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices, cameras, wireless speakers, portable printers, mobile computers, industrial equipment, and medical devices.

Market research firm Omdia predicted that the number of USB Type-C PD-enabled devices would increase from approximately 950 million in 2020 to 4.6 billion in 2024. For new technologies to be quickly introduced into the market, new solutions tailored to them are required.

Existing USB Type-C PD systems require various components to comply with the USB Type-C standard and custom firmware that takes several months to develop.

The MAX77958 standalone USB Type-C PD controller supports GUI-based custom configuration scripts, Fast Role Swap (FRS), and Dual Role Port (DRP), and is a USB Type-C PD 3.0 compliant solution that reduces design, development, and testing time by up to three months.

It features an integrated D+/D- switch for BC1.2 detection and support for lower-version USB ports, which are not typically found in conventional USB-C controllers. Additionally, it is equipped with a 28V VBUS rating, CC pin short-circuit protection, moisture detection, and corrosion resistance, enabling a robust product design.

The MAX77962 USB Type-C PD buck-boost charger features a built-in high-voltage FET (maximum absolute voltage of 30V) capable of providing 28W of charging power. By integrating all power FETs, it reduces the size of the solution to be developed by half.

It can fast charge 2S Li+ batteries at 28W within a voltage range of 3.5~23V. In addition, it is released in compliance with the USB Type-C PD 3.0 standard, eliminating the need for firmware development and solving various challenges for implementing the device.
