A solution for remotely controlling equipment without wired communication lines has been launched. On the 17th, LG U+ and Emerson Korea launched the "W-Box," an industrial wireless communication gateway for remote control.

The W-Box is a gateway device that utilizes WirelessHART (Wireless Highway Addressable Remote Transducer), an industrial short-range wireless communication technology, to connect with various sensors, including vibration and ultrasonic sensors, and collect information. Collected sensor information is transmitted to a server in real time via 5G communication, enabling wireless implementation of all communication sections required for remote control.

In particular, the W-Box can connect to a variety of sensors using WirelessHART technology, eliminating the need for separate wired installation costs beyond power supply. This enables smart plants to be implemented in environments where communication lines are difficult to establish, such as outdoors, underground, at high altitudes, and hazardous areas.

Previously, in order to check the corrosion or erosion of numerous drainage pipes within a plant, separate wiring was required between the ultrasonic sensor and the gateway equipment that collects the sensor information, and between the gateway and the control room. Additionally, depending on the location of the drain pipe, there were many cases where people had to inspect it directly or neglected maintenance due to high construction costs. However, these problems can be solved by utilizing the W-Box.

Meanwhile, the two companies signed a business agreement at Emerson Korea's Jukjeon office building on the same day to launch an industrial wireless communication gateway and collaborate on smart plant projects. Under the agreement, the two companies will expand the W-Box's support scope to include a variety of sensors, including vibration sensors, flow rate sensors, valve lock sensors, gas sensors, and 3D level sensors, and jointly target industries such as chemical and power plants.
