5G convergence services based on network slicing
Testbed to be built in stages by 2023


It is expected that it will become easier for small and medium-sized enterprises and venture companies to test and verify their own 5G content, convergence services, and infrastructure equipment.

The National Information Society Agency (NIA) announced on the 16th that it will build a network slicing-based 5G testbed in cooperation with the Ministry of Science and ICT to support the development and testing of 5G-based infrastructure equipment, terminals, devices, and convergence services for small and medium-sized enterprises and venture companies.

This construction, led by KT, will involve domestic 5G specialized large and small businesses such as Samsung Electronics, Iruon, Innowireless, and Solid, and is scheduled to be completed in stages by 2023.

This will create a test bed where small and medium-sized enterprises and venture companies can create various convergence services, such as smart factories, autonomous vehicles, drones/robots, and immersive media, in an environment that is equal to or better than the commercial 5G networks of mobile carriers.

Based on the hyper-connected intelligent research and development network (KOREN), NIA plans to support the entire cycle of technology development and commercialization consulting across all areas from 5G cores to base stations.

In addition, the company plans to lay the foundation for domestic companies to enter overseas markets through continuous advancements in accordance with the 5G Release 15/16/17 international standards of the mobile communications standards organization 3GPP as well as the Open RAN standards.

Accordingly, it is expected to contribute to expanding the domestic 5G market, which is currently concentrated on smartphones and network infrastructure equipment, into a high value-added 5G B2B-B2G ecosystem such as smart factories, public convergence, smart transportation, and smart cities.
