The Ministry of Science and ICT has begun developing AI to detect illegal counterfeit goods.

The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Korea Customs Service opened the 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) Illegal Counterfeit Product Reading Demonstration Lab' at the Daejeon Techno Park Distance on the 28th.
The verification lab, with a total area of 288 square meters, provides facilities and equipment to process and study relevant data, such as photos and drawings of genuine products, to identify counterfeit products that imitate the product design.
The AI counterfeit product detection project is being promoted as one of the AI convergence projects (AI+X) that supports innovation by integrating AI into each field based on the data dam, a representative task of the Digital New Deal.
Following the selection of the project's operating company in August, the company will quickly proceed with the construction of this verification lab to begin full-scale data learning and AI development.
If an AI counterfeit product detection system is developed and utilized, it is expected to significantly contribute to protecting domestic industries by reducing the annual number of intellectual property infringements (52,000 cases as of 2018) and preventing safety accidents caused by counterfeit products (aka "knockoffs").
Kang Do-hyun, Director General of Artificial Intelligence-Based Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “Digital Dam-based “The development of innovative artificial intelligence services will begin in earnest,” he said, adding, “We will expand AI convergence beyond customs clearance to various fields such as medicine and energy.”
