Expanding HPC support projects to promote AI service development

Naver Cloud Selected as HPC Support Provider
The development of new AI technologies and services is completed only after data collection, processing, and repeated learning to create AI models. This process requires massive computation, and securing computational resources to quickly process massive amounts of data is crucial to the success or failure of AI development.
However, building HPC systems is expensive, posing a significant burden for small organizations and businesses. Accordingly, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 7th the launch of "High-Performance Computing (HPC) Support," which supports the development of new AI technologies and services.
The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to secure and provide more HPC resources (30.6 PF, 1,000 companies and institutions) to companies and institutions this year, compared to 2019 (4 PF, 200 companies and institutions) and 2020 (25.7 PF, 883 companies and institutions). PF stands for petaflops, which means repeating one Flop (Floating-point Operations Per Second) per second, 1,000 trillion times. A teraflop (TF; TeraFlops) is one trillion.
According to the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA), in 2020, 883 small and medium-sized enterprises, venture companies, research institutes, and universities received HPC support, shortening their AI technology development time by an average of 3.9 months and achieving an average monthly cost savings of 5 million won. This year, NAVER Cloud was selected as the provider for the HPC support project, providing year-round support.

Selected users only need to apply for the amount of capacity they need, and can adjust their computing capacity based on monthly usage. Users who applied between December 2020 and January 2021 will receive resources immediately starting in March. To support more users, additional applications will be accepted on the AI Hub Portal starting Monday, March 8th.
