Merck Opens a New World of Liquid Crystal Antenna Communications

Liquid crystal molecular-level switching, non-physical frequency beam steering
Antenna technology that can connect remote areas such as remote areas using liquid crystal technology is emerging, raising expectations that it will be possible to expand the range of communication areas and overcome limitations in the installation of communication means.
Merck, a leading science and technology company, announced on the 30th the commercialization of 'licriOn™', a liquid crystal-based solution for electronic beam steering smart antennas.
The technology uses custom-designed molecules with microwave properties to enable new types of antennas that improve modern data communications.
This is made possible by combining the antenna's element array with a thin layer of licriOn™ liquid crystals. The liquid crystals are switched on a molecular level, enabling powerful, precise, and energy-efficient beam steering.
Accordingly, the licriOn™-based antenna beam can be electronically steered in the desired direction without the need to physically move the antenna.
It is also more compact and delivers superior performance with less energy, making it significantly less expensive to produce than existing solutions.
In addition, compared to mechanical antennas, the maintenance, repair, and replacement cycles are longer.
The smart antenna is very flat, allowing for a more compact and modular design than previous generations of antennas. This makes it easy to load onto ships, aircraft, and other means of transportation.
This allows licriOn™-based smart antennas to easily connect to mobile and geostationary satellites.
Its energy and cost efficiency also allows for widespread connectivity in remote areas where high-speed Internet access is not available today.

Flexible OLEDs Must Improve Lifespan and Efficiency to Achieve Mass Adoption
Displays are now entering an era of 'flexibility.' As interest shifts toward flexible technology, plastic organic light-emitting diodes (POLED) are attracting attention. According to market research firm IHS Markit, OLED has caught up with liquid crystal displays (LCD), which dominate the smartphone display market, and demand for flexible OLED panels is increasing sharply, with predictions that they will surpass flat-panel OLED panels in the third quarter of this year. Compared to LED, OLED allows users to adjust color temperature, color, and brightness, and since it is an area light source that emits light from all surfaces, the area where heat is dissipated is wide, making it relatively free from heat concerns. Assuming operation in a typical environment, no heat sink is required, and since the film thickness is thin, transparency is possible. Because it can be made from plastic rather than glass, it is also possible to flex it. Aspects of OLED technology that have yet to be resolved are efficiency, lifespan, light extraction, and cost. OLED can theoretically achieve luminous efficiency of up to 190 lm/W, but currently it is around 70 lm/W, a level similar to LED. Lifespan can reach 10,000 hours, but to compete with LED, it needs to achieve 30,000 hours.

페라테크는 플렉시블 유기 LCD(organic LCD, OLCD)와 함께 통합되는 AM(active-matrix) 3D 포스 터치 센서를 발표했다. 그리고 두 와해성 기술의 결합을 통해 어떻게 새로운 애플리케이션을 구현할 수 있는지를 시연함으로써 HMI의 노하우를 확장하고 있다. 이 솔루션은 웨어러블 기기에서부터 대형 디스플레이까지 다양한 크기의 멀티 포인트 포스 터치 센싱 기술을 통합하여 플렉시블 디스플레이 개발에 활용될 수 있다. 유연한 특성을 지녀 둥글게 구부릴 수 있으며 손목밴드, 대시보드 등 여러 형태의 표면을 가지고 있는 최종 애플리케이션의 모양에 맞게 변형이 가능하다. 페라테크의 CEO 존 스타크(Jon Stark) 는 “이번 발표는 페라테크에 있어서 매우 중대한 기술적 성과로 기록될 것”이라며, “디스플레이를 통합한 플렉시블 AM 3D 터치 센서 기술이 발표된 것은 업계에서 이번이 처음이며 머크(Merck) 및 플렉스이네이블(FlexEnable)과의 협력 덕분에 우리는 HMI기술의 지평을 더욱 넓힐 수 있는 새로운 솔루션을 선보이게 되었다”고 밝혔다.

포항공대 노준석·김영기 교수 연구팀이 메타물질에 액정기술을 접목해 외부자극에 반응하는 초소형 홀로그램 장치를 개발했다. 기존 메타표면을 이용한 장치는 한 번 소자를 제작하면 그 광학적 특성을 바꿀 수 없어, 처음 프로그래밍된 하나의 이미지만을 공간에 구현하는 데 그쳤다. 이에 연구팀은 외부 자극에 반응해 광학적 특성을 쉽게 바꿀 수 있는 액정을 메타물질에 접목했다.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
