Confirming the feasibility of 8K-UHD and 5G convergence media services
A domestic research team will hold a workshop to lead the next-generation 8K-UHD media era and demonstrate ultra-high-definition media transmission technology. Global broadcasting and communications experts will gather together to discuss trends in media services and technology development, creating a stepping stone for mutual cooperation and development.
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced that it will hold the 'Global 8K-UHDTV Workshop' for two days starting on the 28th at the Baekhakjajayu Resort in Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi-do, together with the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) and the Korea Broadcasting Engineers & Technicians Association (KOBETA).
This workshop will be held both online and offline, and will be attended by the three domestic terrestrial broadcasters KBS, MBC, and SBS, as well as global home appliance companies such as Samsung and LG, and LG Uplus.
In addition, broadcasting and communications experts from various countries, including the 8K-Consortium, UHD Forum, ATSC (Advanced Television Standards Committee), Sinclair Broadcast Group, and NAB, will be invited to share their perspectives on 8K-UHD media technology and services.
This workshop consists of three sessions: △8K-UHD media service and technology trends △Present and future of broadcasting and communications convergence media △Broadcasting media service technology trends, and an 8K-UHD media service demonstration will also be held.
The demonstration showcases the potential of the underlying technology to receive 8K-UHD signals in real time from an experimental station built at the KBS transmission station in Gamaksan Mountain.
Based on this basic technology, we plan to further develop various methods such as multi-antenna (MIMO) channel bonding, OTA/OTT linkage, and 5G-MBMS to enable services in various conditions.
In addition to ETRI, KBS, Samsung, LG, and LG Uplus, domestic companies and universities such as CleverLogic, Agos, Lowasis, Kai Media, and Korea Maritime and Ocean University are jointly participating in this demonstration.
Through this demonstration, ETRI demonstrated 8K-UHD transmission based on ATSC 3.0 and broadcasting/telecommunications convergence. We expect that by actively promoting technology and ATSC 3.0 domestically produced equipment, we will be able to contribute to leading global 8K-UHD technology.
ETRI Communications and Media Research Institute Director Bang Seung-chan said, "The transition to the 8K-UHD media era has already begun. To proactively respond to this change, I hope this workshop will foster meaningful information exchange on the latest terrestrial broadcasting technology trends, 8K-UHD trends, and broadcasting-telecommunications convergence technologies."
