Gachon University (President Gil-yea Lee) has been selected as a base university for training next-generation semiconductor experts.

Gachon University announced on the 27th that it was recently selected as the lead institution for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's large-scale national project, the '2021 Semiconductor Infrastructure Construction Support Project.'

Following Pohang University of Science and Technology and Seoul National University, Gachon University was selected as the lead institution for this project. It is a large-scale national project worth 10 billion won per year that will run until March 31st of next year. Gachon University, the lead institution, as well as Chungbuk National University, Chonnam National University, Kumoh National Institute of Technology, Korea University of Technology and Education, and Pohang University of Science and Technology will be participating institutions.

These universities plan to receive up to 10 billion won in government subsidies and around 1 billion won in private capital in the future to establish a foundation for next-generation semiconductor processing equipment, measurement, and device manufacturing, and to open and operate educational programs that will lead semiconductor research and development and update aging semiconductor equipment, thereby building semiconductor infrastructure, training research personnel, and responding to industry demands.

Six universities, including Gachon University, will form a consortium for joint equipment use among participating universities through government and private investment and provide process and educational infrastructure for next-generation semiconductors, including thin-film semiconductors, power semiconductors, optical semiconductors, automotive semiconductors, semiconductor equipment, and packaging.

Professor Lee Sang-ryeol of Gachon University, who is in charge of the overall management, said, “Gachon University is developing a large-scale national semiconductor research institute to reflect the needs of surrounding semiconductor-related companies, including Pangyo Techno Valley, and to cultivate the next generation of advanced semiconductor talents in Korea.“It is very significant in that it will lead the book business and establish itself as a groundbreaking hub university in the semiconductor industry,” he said.
