Materials Science Takes the Lead in Overcoming COVID-19 Through Educational Donations

The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS, President Lee Jeong-hwan), a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT, is actively working to overcome COVID-19 through an educational donation program.
The Korea Institute of Materials Science announced on the 29th that it recently conducted an educational donation program called "Delivery Science" to celebrate Science Month in April, selecting elementary schools in underprivileged (island) areas and delivering science teaching aids and experience kits.
"Delivery Science" is an in-house educational donation program by the Korea Institute of Materials Science that delivers science books and experience kits to families and schools in underprivileged areas that have registered individually, enabling easy access to science learning and hands-on experiences at home and in schools within those regions.
Last year, as elementary, middle, and high school students nationwide were unable to receive normal education due to the COVID-19 virus, the Korea Institute of Materials Science donated science books and experience kits to numerous schools and households, including Josan Elementary School in Ganghwa, Incheon, with the aim of spreading students' interest in science and promoting their understanding of research institutions.
In celebration of Science Month this April, the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) [selected] schools with 50 or fewer students in underprivileged areas (towns and villages) in Tongyeong, Gyeongnam Wonryang Elementary School (36 students) and Deokjeok Elementary School (35 students) in Ongjin, Incheon were selected, and science teaching aids and kits worth 1.5 million won, which were requested separately, were delivered to the schools. Each school will conduct science experience activities with the students using the provided science supplies and submit the results to the Institute of Materials Science.
Lee Jeong-hwan, President of the Korea Institute of Materials Science, said, “It is true that there are concerns about the decline in educational learning among students as well as adults as the aftermath of the COVID-19 virus continues for a long time,” adding, “I hope that this educational donation program will help students overcome the current situation without losing interest in science.”
Meanwhile, the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) plans to continue providing science culture programs for home learning suitable for the contactless era by separately conducting 'Science Delivered' for 100 households with youth in childcare. KIST and KAIST Prove Potential of "Step-on Charging" Lithium-ion Batteries
As demand for large-capacity energy storage media increases, interest in developing high-capacity lithium alloy batteries is growing. However, these batteries face the problem of severe capacity degradation and significant volume changes due to pressure generated during charging and discharging processes. In particular, since phenomena that occur when pressure is applied to lithium battery electrodes take place at the nanoscale level, there have been difficulties in creating experimental environments, making direct measurement and observation challenging. In response, Dr. Kim Sang-tae's team at KIST's Electronic Materials Research Division conducted joint research with Professor Yuk Jong-min's team at KAIST to elucidate the effects of pressure during battery charging and discharging processes, and based on this, presented the feasibility of lithium-ion batteries that can be charged under applied pressure.

Ecolab Expands AI Data Center Cooling Business Through Acquisition of CoolIT
Ecolab has agreed to acquire CoolIT Systems, a liquid cooling company for AI data centers, for approximately $4.75 billion. The transaction is expected to close by Q3 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. CoolIT has been supplying direct-to-chip cooling-based coolant distribution units, cold plates, and manifolds, serving hyperscale data centers and colocation operators as customers. This acquisition is a measure to address the high-heat and high-density server environments created by AI proliferation. Ecolab plans to combine its water management and digital monitoring capabilities with CoolIT's hardware technology to expand its data center cooling business.
