Silicon wafer shipments in Q1 2021 reach all-time high

The Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) announced on the 4th that silicon wafer shipments in the first quarter of 2021 reached 3.337 billion square inches, a 4% increase compared to the fourth quarter of last year.
This represents a 14% increase compared to 2.92 billion square inches in the first quarter of 2020 and surpasses the all-time high recorded in the third quarter of 2018.
The data released by the SEMI Silicon Manufacturing Group (SMG) includes virgin test wafers and epitaxial silicon wafers, as well as polished silicon wafers and non-polished silicon wafers.
Neil Weaver, Director of Product Development and Applications at Shin-Etsu Handotai America and Chairman of SMG, explained, “Logic semiconductors and foundries are the strongest factors driving the increase in silicon wafer shipments,” adding, “The recovery of the memory market also led to increased shipments in the first quarter of 2021.”
Silicon wafers are a core material for semiconductor manufacturing and are an essential component of virtually all electronic products. Precision-machined silicon discs are produced in various diameters ranging from 1 inch to 12 inches and are used as substrate materials to produce most semiconductor chips.
