The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS, President Lee Jeong-hwan), a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT, is actively engaging in research in the field of materials technology and planning and discovering related projects to realize carbon neutrality.

The Korea Institute of Materials Science announced on the 6th that it has recently established the 'Carbon Neutral Materials Technology Research Planning Group' within the institute as an organization to plan, discover, and carry out research projects on full-cycle materials technology related to hydrogen energy and gas turbine manufacturing technology.

In addition, 'Carbon Neutrality Sheriffs' were appointed in each research division to respond to carbon neutrality policies, securing personnel dedicated to defining carbon neutrality from a materials R&D perspective and identifying and planning related themes.

With the adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015 and the application of the new climate regime starting in January 2021, it has become urgent to develop innovative technologies capable of achieving carbon neutrality in the materials and components sector and to devise measures to achieve this.

The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) has established a dedicated organization responsible for building a carbon-neutral technology roadmap and identifying and planning future large-scale projects, with the goal of planning, discovering, executing, and applying research projects in fields requiring the development of new innovative technologies, and is concretizing related activities.I plan to go.

The 'Carbon Neutral Materials Technology Research Planning Group' will identify and plan R&D themes centered on the 'Hydrogen Energy Materials Technology Team,' which responds to the core materials and components sector in preparation for the expansion of the hydrogen economy, and the 'Gas Turbine Manufacturing Technology Team,' which responds to the fields of carbon-reducing, eco-friendly gas turbine materials, components, and manufacturing technologies.

In addition, the 'Carbon Neutrality Sheriff Team' plans to support the discovery and planning of R&D themes by defining carbon neutrality from the perspective of materials R&D, shifting researchers' perceptions regarding carbon neutrality, and investigating, analyzing, and disseminating carbon neutrality-related policies as well as domestic and international trends in new technologies.

They will systematize KIMS’s materials technology for realizing carbon neutrality and identify promising future business topics, while reflecting these results in KIMS’s development strategy, thereby helping KIMS serve as a channel to support the national carbon neutrality policy.

Lee Jung-hwan, President of the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS), stated, “We are currently at a turning point where major issues are shifting from materials, parts, and equipment to infectious diseases and sensors, and finally to carbon neutrality.
