LG Electronics has acquired functional safety international certification for autonomous driving core components, gaining recognition for its automotive electronics technology capabilities.


On the 10th, LG Electronics announced that its ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) forward-facing camera, a core component for autonomous driving, has received certification for 'ISO 26262 Functional Safety Product,' an international standard specification, from TÜV Rheinland, a global testing and certification body. This is the first time this organization has granted identical certification among autonomous driving core components.

Additionally, the development process for manufacturing this camera also received 'ISO 26262 Functional Safety Process' certification. LG Electronics recognized advanced functional safety compared to the Level 2 certification it received in 2017, and has successfully achieved Level 3 certification for the first time domestically. All automotive electronic components developed according to this process will meet the ISO 26262 standard.

ISO 26262 certification is an international standard specification that measures the probability of accidents occurring due to component failures or development process errors, and guarantees how functionally safe the component and process are. This certification has become increasingly important as global automakers demand autonomous driving components with higher reliability.

The ADAS forward-facing camera that LG Electronics received certification for this time collects various traffic information from the front of the vehicle through various sensors, which is why it is called the 'eyes' of autonomous vehicles. It recognizes obstacles and assists with emergency braking when there is collision risk, and automatically maintains lane position or maintains a certain distance from the vehicle ahead.

As autonomous driving technology development and infrastructure construction are rapidly expanding recently, it is particularly significant that LG Electronics has gained recognition for its automotive electronics technology capabilities not only in autonomous driving core components but also in the development process from design through verification to production.

Manuel Diez, Cybersecurity and Functional Safety Manager at TÜV Rheinland, explained, "LG Electronics is a company with outstanding functional safety technology expertise in the automotive component field," and "by maintaining high levels of quality, it will become a key component supplier in the automotive industry."
