Korea-EU joint post-5G workshop held via video conference
Discussing cooperation with Europe on 6G technology development and standardization


On the 2nd, the Ministry of Science and ICT held the 'EU-Korea Cooperation Workshop on the Vision Beyond 5G' online with the European Commission (EC) on the topic of next-generation network innovation and standards cooperation.

Last November, Korea and the European Union (EU) agreed to strengthen cooperation on standardization in the fields of information and communication and digital economy at the ‘1st Korea-EU Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Policy Dialogue’. Accordingly, this event was organized to discuss ways to cooperate on standards to accelerate the development and use of 6G mobile communication network technology after 5G mobile communication.

The joint workshop introduced the digital policy trends of Korea and the EU, as well as the development and standardization of mobile communication technology. In addition, discussions on future cooperation plans followed.

In their keynote speeches, Jaejin Seol, Director of the Innovation Network Team at the Ministry of Science and ICT, and David Ringrose, Deputy Director of the EC Policy Strategy Department, introduced the two countries’ preparedness to secure competitiveness in 6G technology and standards and emphasized the need for future cooperation. In the first session, Lee Sang-guk, Director of the Digital New Deal Support Division of the Ministry of Science and ICT, and Bernard Barani, Deputy Director of the European Commission, introduced Korea’s digital new deal policy and Europe’s future network vision after 5G.

In the 2nd session, Professor Lee Ho-won of Hankyung University and others introduced the △6G core technology development roadmap and service scenarios for implementing six major visions, including ultra-performance and ultra-space. In the 3rd session, Colin Willcock, Chairman of the 5G Industry Alliance, and others explained △next-generation network service scenarios for connected industries, such as smart factories and smart cities, and plans for implementing international standardization. In the 4th session, experts from both countries discussed △cooperation measures, such as the establishment of a group of industry-academia-research experts and international joint research, to secure technological and standard competitiveness in the next-generation network field.

Lee Seung-won, the director general of the Ministry of Science and ICT’s Information and Communication Industry Policy Bureau, said, “Mobile communications networks are a key infrastructure for the Digital New Deal, and their importance has grown even more recently as the non-face-to-face culture has spread.” He added, “Starting with this joint workshop with Europe, we will further strengthen cooperative activities with major overseas countries so that our country can also lead in 6G technology.”
