The semiconductor and display industries reviewed the status of the joint carbon neutrality declaration. At the event, business leaders from the semiconductor and display industries emphasized that strengthening solidarity and cooperation to revitalize the industrial ecosystem among component and materials, parts, and equipment (Sobujang) companies is of the utmost importance for carbon neutrality.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (Minister Moon Seung-wook) held the '2nd Semiconductor and Display Carbon Neutrality Committee' on the 28th at the L Tower in Seoul, with executives from leading companies in the industry and related experts in attendance.

At the meeting, Lee Sang-jun, Head of the Climate Change Research Team at the Korea Energy Economics Institute, presented 'Key Tasks for Carbon Neutrality in the Semiconductor and Display Industries.'

Team Leader Lee Sang-jun mentioned that the development of core eco-friendly process technologies is necessary for sustainable carbon neutrality in the semiconductor and display industries, and emphasized that furthermore, the industry must contribute to social carbon reduction by developing and supplying top-tier eco-friendly products such as low-power semiconductors and high-efficiency displays.

As key tasks for this, suggestions were made regarding: △ becoming an eco-friendly global leader in the semiconductor and display industries through the implementation of carbon neutrality; △ achieving a super-gap in carbon-neutral technology through technological innovation; and △ creating global social value through carbon-neutral products and value chain cooperation.

Park Young-ho, Display PD at the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology Evaluation and Management, who was in charge of the second presentation, presented the 'Current Status of the Semiconductor and Display Carbon Neutrality Technology Development Roadmap.'

It introduced three key technologies for carbon reduction, including the development of high-efficiency emission control technology, the development of eco-friendly process gases for semiconductors and displays, and the development of eco-friendly gas GWP certification and process evaluation technology. It also announced plans to complete detailed planning and apply for a preliminary feasibility study within the year to support the development of these technologies.

In the subsequent discussion, participants discussed expanding tax credits for investments in carbon reduction facilities and developing carbon-neutral technologies to achieve carbon neutrality. Suggestions were made regarding support, institutional improvements for the development and supply of eco-friendly products, and a discussion was held on response directions.

Lee Chang-han, Vice Chairman of the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, emphasized, “Promoting carbon neutrality in the semiconductor industry is a highly challenging task, making the development of groundbreaking eco-friendly technologies crucial,” adding, “To this end, strengthening solidarity and cooperation among device and component companies to revitalize the industrial ecosystem is of the utmost importance.”

Kim Seong-jin, Vice Chairman of the Korea Display Industry Association, stated, “Carbon neutrality requires the interest and efforts of all citizens as well as innovation across the entire industry,” adding, “The display industry will strive to lead the realization of carbon neutrality through groundbreaking technology development in cooperation among the private, public, academic, and research sectors.”

An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy stated, “Our semiconductor and display industries are leading the world, so achieving carbon neutrality presents the challenge of pioneering a path that no one has ever taken before,” adding, “We hope the industry will demonstrate bold investment to achieve carbon neutrality, and the government will spare no effort in providing the various support necessary for carbon neutrality.”
