Samsung Electronics Obtains OpenChain Certification, an Open Source International Standard

Plans to spread compliance tips through SOSCON this year
Open source software is freely available to anyone because its source code is publicly available. However, failure to comply with the requirements of open source licenses can lead to issues such as copyright infringement. Open source compliance is a comprehensive corporate process designed to prevent such issues. In 2020, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) adopted the certification of the OpenChain Project as the first international standard for open source compliance.
Samsung Electronics announced on the 8th that it had received international certification (ISO/IEC 5230:2020) as a standard-compliant company for the "OpenChain Project." The OpenChain Project, launched in 2016 under the leadership of the non-profit Linux Foundation, certifies companies that have an effective and consistent open source compliance system.

The OpenChain Project evaluates each company's open source compliance capabilities by assessing whether they meet the following criteria: ▲adequacy of internal policies/systems ▲expertise of the organization/personnel in charge ▲training of internal members. Samsung Electronics expected that this certification would increase the credibility of its software by recognizing its open source utilization capabilities.
Samsung Electronics stated that since 2012, it has established a dedicated open source organization and system, and has been carrying out various activities to ensure safe and efficient use of open source. They established a global, integrated open source policy and established a system to identify open source licenses and ensure compliance with requirements at all stages of development, from software planning to implementation and verification. They also operate online and offline training programs to enhance developer understanding.
Additionally, Samsung has been hosting the annual "Samsung Open Source Conference (SOSCON)" since 2014. SOSCON is Korea's largest open source conference, sharing information and insights on the latest open source-based technologies, including 5G, AI, robotics, and big data. At this year's conference, Samsung Electronics plans to share its compliance expertise to enhance the reliability of the entire domestic software supply chain.
Samsung Research Vice President Choi Seung-beom said, “Open source software accounts for 70% of software used across all industries, demonstrating its immense importance,” and added, “We will share the secrets we have accumulated over the years with domestic small and medium-sized enterprises and developers to grow together.”

Databricks Unveils Open AI Security Monitoring 'Lakewatch'
Databricks entered the security market on March 24 by unveiling LakeWatch, an open-source agentic SIEM. The core functionality of this product is to integrate and analyze security, IT, and business data in a single environment to support AI-based threat detection and investigation.
