5G Standalone (SA) mode is a method of providing services using only the 5G network, and it offers longer device battery life and faster response speed than the currently available Non-Standalone (NSA) mode.
KT announced that it began commercial 5G Standalone (SA) service on the 15th.

SA is available on three Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra models, and there are plans to expand the number of supported devices in cooperation with the manufacturer in the future. To switch to SA, go to 'Settings - Software Update - Download and Install' in the device menu and reboot one more time.
The Korea Information and Communications Technology Association (TTA) conducted a comparative test of battery life between SA and NSA using the Samsung Galaxy S20+ device, and it was confirmed that SA (13 hours 38 minutes) lasted up to 1 hour 6 minutes (8.8%) longer than NSA (12 hours 32 minutes).
By leveraging the characteristics of 5G base stations, which are deployed more densely than LTE, SA is expected to enable a more sophisticated disaster text message service starting at the end of this year following consultations with relevant agencies and system development. Disaster text messages based on LTE base stations sometimes received information from unnecessary nearby areas. However, SA is expected to reduce user inconvenience by providing disaster alerts only for the local area and contribute to the effective dissemination of disaster information.
KT stated that it built its network with the transition to SA in mind from the start of its 5G NSA service, and that it has continued technology development and field verification to provide a commercial SA network. Since last January, it has also conducted a pilot SA service for employees on its nationwide commercial 5G network.
SA, which is being commercialized about two years and three months after the launch of 5G services in April 2019, is expected to accelerate the development of industrial 5G services based on technologies such as network slicing, as well as consumer services such as VoNR, which allows voice calls to be made only over 5G networks.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert

SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
