The Personal Information Protection Commission (Chairman Yoon Jong-in) shared its AI Personal Information Self-Regulatory Standards with the international community.

The Personal Information Protection Commission announced on July 20 that it had published the English version of the 'AI Personal Information Protection Self-Checklist' in relation to personal information protection in artificial intelligence (AI), which is emerging as an issue of international interest.

On May 31, the Personal Information Protection Commission published a guide to preventing personal information infringements that may occur during the development and operation of artificial intelligence-based services.

While there have been various discussions on personal information protection related to artificial intelligence both domestically and internationally, they have remained at the level of abstract principles. In contrast, the self-checklist prepared by the Personal Information Protection Commission presents 16 items and 54 confirmation items to be checked step by step, along with 6 principles of major obligations and recommendations under the Personal Information Protection Act that must be observed to safely process personal information during the design, development, and operation of artificial intelligence services.

The self-assessment checklist, announced at the end of May, received significant attention from countries around the world when it was introduced at the Asia-Pacific Data Protection Authority (APPA) Summit.

Accordingly, the publication of the English version of this self-assessment checklist, along with efforts to widely publicize it to the international community, is expected to help Korea establish itself as a leader in international standards for AI personal information protection.
