The opening of a smart manufacturing demonstration plant in Changwon, designed to support corporate productivity improvements and higher added value, is expected to spur digital innovation in the industrial complex.

On the 28th, the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI) held an opening ceremony for a smart manufacturing demonstration factory at the Changwon Agricultural Technology Center in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do.

The event was attended by Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Moon Seung-wook, Vice Governor of Gyeongsangnam-do Ha Byung-pil, Mayor of Changwon Heo Seong-moo, as well as anchor companies that participated in the construction of the center, such as Hyundai Wia, Doosan Machine Tools, Hwacheon Machinery, Siemens, SK Telecom, and Dell, as well as officials from the Gyeongnam ICT Association.

The smart manufacturing demonstration plant, which opened today, is the first project of the Smart Green Industrial Complex and is a key infrastructure for the smart industrial complex, supporting increased productivity and higher added value for companies using cutting-edge ICT technologies such as digital twins.

With this opening ceremony as an opportunity, KETI plans to take the lead in providing broad technological support for technological innovation not only in Changwon City but also in the domestic manufacturing industry.

The center provides a package of D (data-based)-N (5G communication)-A (industrial artificial intelligence) technologies for advanced production of cutting-edge precision machinery parts, and provides customized consulting encompassing development, production, and service. Additionally, we support standards-based interoperability and functional safety evaluations by utilizing the testing and evaluation system and certification system for smart manufacturing components and equipment.

In addition, KETI plans to jointly pursue a human resources training program to advance the manufacturing industry with local organizations and establish and operate a permanent support team to support process improvement and intelligence.

Last July, the government selected "Smart Green Industrial Complexes" as one of the ten major tasks of the Korean New Deal to overcome the COVID-19 crisis and discover new growth engines, and in September, it announced the "Smart Green Industrial Complex Implementation Strategy," which detailed the Smart Green Industrial Complex promotion plan.

Since then, the basis for promoting the smart green industrial complex project has been established through the revision of the Industrial Cluster Act, and the smart green industrial complex development project is being promoted in earnest.

KETI President Kim Young-sam said, “With the opening of this center, which integrates the world-class smart manufacturing technology capabilities accumulated at KETI, we will lead the success of the smart green industrial complex project,” and “We will do our best to lead the digital transformation of the manufacturing industry in the southeastern region and Korea.”

Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Moon Seung-wook said, “The smart manufacturing demonstration plant will become a place for education that will develop the digital capabilities of workers and college students, and at the same time, it will be a place that gives dreams to growing students.” He requested the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute and the Smart Industrial Complex Business Group to “develop better programs to create an environment where students and young people can grow into leading players in advanced industries,” and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy also stated that it would actively support this.
