The only comprehensive book on materials in Korea analyzing materials technology for the post-COVID era has been published.


The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS, President Lee Jeong-hwan), a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT, has published the 'Materials Technology White Paper 2020'. The Materials Technology White Paper is the only white paper on materials technology in Korea, systematically organizing materials information with the participation of experts in the field. First published in 2009, this year marks the twelfth edition.

The theme for this session is 'Post-COVID-19 Response Materials Technology.' Since the 2000s, a significant number of national projects have emerged focusing on the bio sector as a 주목받는 future growth engine. On the other hand, it is still difficult to find tangible results regarding the current international competitiveness of the domestic bio sector. Had it been supported by sustained interest and active investment, rather than fleeting support swept up in global trends, the speed of domestic COVID-19 vaccine development could have been much faster than it is now.

The Materials Technology White Paper 2020 focused on the proposition that applied science for improving the quality of life for the people is established on the foundation of basic science. It is based on the belief that materials technology can only lead to results when sufficient support and research continuity are maintained, and when there is patience based on a long-term perspective and trust. Accordingly, it provides an in-depth analysis of technologies related to disease prevention and medical materials, contactless environment and digital materials, and eco-friendly and new energy materials, and meticulously includes global policies in the relevant fields and information on research and development of promising materials over the next 10 years.

Lee Jung-hwan, President of the Korea Institute of Materials Science and Technology, stated, “Every year when publishing the Materials Technology White Paper, I give deep thought to how the information in the book can be utilized,” adding, “I will do my utmost to fulfill the role of the White Paper so that it not only conveys useful information but also suggests directions that will open new horizons for research.”
