Successful transmission of '100m' communication signal using 6G THz band
Utilizing a power amplifier equipped with a maximum 15dBm output signal


6G mobile communication is expected to begin standardization discussions around 2025 and be commercialized in 2029. It enables faster wireless transmission speeds compared to 5G, as well as support for low-latency and high-reliability communication. As it is regarded as a means to enable the Ambient Internet of Everything (AIoE), where people, objects, and spaces are closely and organically connected, leading companies are scrambling to enter the field.

LG Electronics announced on the 19th that it succeeded in transmitting a communication signal over a distance of more than 100 meters using the 6G terahertz (THz) band outdoors with the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany on the 13th.

LG Electronics and Fraunhofer also developed a power amplifier for stable communication in the 6G THz band. Ultra-wideband frequencies like 6G THz have a short frequency range and suffer from significant power loss during antenna transmission and reception, requiring a power amplifier to address these issues. The new power amplifier is capable of stable transmission and reception in the 155–175 GHz range with an output signal of up to 15 dBm.

In this demonstration, in addition to the power amplifier, adaptive beamforming—which changes the beam direction based on channel changes and receiver position—and high-gain antenna switching technology, which transmits multiple output signals to the antenna, were also unveiled.

LG Electronics Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Park Il-pyung stated, “We will continue to cooperate with domestic and international 6G R&D research institutions and companies to lead the development of 6G technology.”

Meanwhile, LG Electronics established the 'LG-KAIST 6G Research Center' with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 2019, and is accelerating efforts to secure core 6G technologies by strengthening collaboration with Keysight Technologies, a global measurement instrument company, earlier this year. In June, it was selected as the chair company of the 'Next G Alliance,' organized by the Telecommunications Industry Association of the United States (ATIS).
