Samsung Electronics has secured two additional seats on the 3GPP leadership board, leading communications standards to expand the 5G ecosystem.

Samsung Electronics was elected as vice-chairman of two divisions at the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) standards meeting held from August 16 to 28.

3GPP is the world's largest technology standards organization that develops standards for mobile communications, and Jaeyeon Song, a researcher at Samsung Research, and Narendranath Durga Tangudu, a researcher at Samsung Research's Bengaluru Research Center in India, were elected as vice-chairs of 3GPP's SA4 and CT3 subcommittees, respectively.

With this, Samsung Electronics now holds the largest number of chairmanships in the industry, with seven seats (two chairmen and five vice chairmen).

SA4 is a division that develops technology to transmit realistic media such as 5G-based video streaming and XR (extended reality).

Researcher Song Jae-yeon was elected as Vice Chairman in recognition of his standards activities and expertise in MPEG, which develops video formats and transmission, and ATSC, which develops digital broadcasting standards.

CT3 is a division that establishes an open interface connecting 5G communication networks and external networks.
br /> Researcher Naren Tangudu was elected Vice Chairman in recognition of his achievements in developing a standard interface that opens 5G networks to internet service providers and enables low-latency services.

“In order to provide differentiated services based on 5G, it is necessary to evolve communication systems that support new media such as XR and enable close integration with external services,” said Choi Sung-hyun, Executive Director and Head of the Next Generation Communications Research Center at Samsung Research. “Along with securing leadership within 3GPP, Samsung Research will continue to strengthen its contributions to the development of next-generation mobile communication technologies and technologies that expand the 5G ecosystem.”

Samsung Electronics was appointed as the chairman of RAN1 (Radio Access Network Working Group 1, a radio access physical layer technology division) that develops communication modem technology in May, and was also elected as the vice chairman of SA4 and CT3 divisions, thereby taking the lead in technological innovation to improve 5G performance and technology development to expand the 5G ecosystem.

In addition, Samsung Electronics plans to lead discussions on 6G standards along with the standardization of '5G-Advanced' technology, the next-generation 5G.
