Samsung Electronics has lowered the barriers to adoption of its next-generation memory platform and expanded its ecosystem through open-sourcing.

Samsung Electronics unveiled an open-source software solution on the 7th to expand the ecosystem of CXL memory, the first of its kind in the industry.

CXL (Compute Express Link, CXL) is a next-generation interface proposed to more efficiently utilize different types of devices in high-performance computing systems such as AI, machine learning, and big data. Applying CXL-based DRAM can dramatically expand the system's memory capacity.

Following the introduction of CXL-based DRAM in May, Samsung Electronics developed the Scalable Memory Development Kit (SMDK) to increase system developers' access to CXL DRAM technology.

SMDK is a software development tool consisting of APIs, libraries, etc. that helps existing main memory and CXL memory operate optimally in the next-generation heterogeneous memory system environment.

A library is a set of functions that developers use when developing programs, and an API acts as a passageway to access the library. In other words, developers can quickly and easily create the programs they want through APIs without having to recreate the functions required for program development.

Additionally, open-source SMDK allows software developers to adjust the usage priorities, usage, bandwidth, and security features of conventional and CXL memory to suit various system environments.

“The importance of software is being emphasized in high-performance computing systems equipped with next-generation memory,” said Park Cheol-min, executive director of the product planning team at Samsung Electronics’ memory business division. “Samsung Electronics will provide total memory solutions encompassing hardware and software so that customers can develop new systems in a timely manner and the ecosystem can expand rapidly.”

Samsung Electronics plans to optimize SMDK through evaluation and verification in various application environments, including AI and edge cloud, with key customers, and make it available to all developers in the first half of next year.
