Applied Materials Korea (CEO Mark Lee), a global leader in materials engineering solutions, is stepping up to protect the local community's environment.


Applied announced on the 1st that it will support the 'Our River Guardian' activities conducted by the Environmental Action Alliance (Chairman Lee Kyung-yul) starting in November.

The "Our Stream Guardians" activity for environmental protection education and practice is a program designed to protect the water quality of Hwangguji Stream in Hwaseong City and Osan Stream in Osan City, and to conduct water quality environmental education for elementary, middle, and high school students and their families in the surrounding areas. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the plan is to provide kits that allow families to freely carry out water quality improvement activities at home and to conduct water protection education based on video materials.

Households that apply can directly check the water quality of nearby streams using a 'water pollution measurement kit' and purify the water by making EM (Effective Micro-organisms) mud balls using an 'EM mud ball making kit' and throwing them into the stream. The EM mud balls contain about 80 beneficial microorganisms, such as yeast and lactic acid bacteria, so when thrown, they gradually dissolve, decompose stream debris, and improve water quality. During the activity period, a total of 44,000 mud balls are thrown into Hwangguji Stream, Osan Stream, and nearby tributaries.

Lee Kyung-yul, President of the Environmental Action Alliance, stated, “Our ‘River Guardians’ program, in collaboration with Applied Materials Korea, will serve as an exemplary non-face-to-face activity that allows youth to easily and enjoyably visit nearby rivers and protect water quality on their own,” adding, “I hope that through this activity, more people will take an interest in the river ecosystem and continue small actions for coexistence.”
