KIMS and Surface Treatment Association Join Hands for Surface Treatment

The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS, President Lee Jeong-hwan), a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the Korea Surface Treatment Industry Cooperative have joined hands to support the domestic surface treatment industry.
On November 22, the Korea Institute of Materials Science signed a comprehensive business partnership agreement with the Surface Treatment Cooperative Association at the main conference room of the Institute's main building in Seongsan-gu, Changwon-si, to explore mutual cooperation measures regarding support for the surface treatment industry, and pledged to faithfully implement the agreement.
The Surface Treatment Cooperative was established in 1980 and is an organization that leads the foundational technologies that form the basis of all industries, ranging from automobiles, machinery, electrical, electronic, and aerospace industries.
In addition to playing a pivotal role in driving the development of the domestic plating industry, it has been widely contributing to the sustainable development of the plating business through initiatives such as establishing specialized complexes, hosting surface treatment technology competitions, and pioneering overseas markets.
This MOU aims to foster mutual policy sharing, linkage, and cooperation for the development of the surface treatment industry through the establishment of a mutually organic cooperation system.
Moving forward, the two institutions will carry out: fostering industrial development through industry-academia cooperation; mutual exchange and cooperation in academics, technology, and information; training to improve the job skills of employees in the surface treatment industry; and employment support and field training.
Lee Jeong-hwan, President of the Korea Institute of Materials Science, stated, “This MOU looks far ahead to the future of the surface treatment field, which is developing rapidly alongside industrial growth, and aims for the domestic industry to be a pivotal pillar in this field. "The goal is to explore ways to fulfill a leadership role," he said. "As surface treatment technology is the final processing stage for metal materials and plays a crucial role in determining product lifespan and price as well as driving product sophistication, the Korea Institute of Materials Science will continue to strive to find ways to contribute to the development of the domestic industry by actively cooperating in this area."

Ecolab Expands AI Data Center Cooling Business Through Acquisition of CoolIT
Ecolab has agreed to acquire CoolIT Systems, a liquid cooling company for AI data centers, for approximately $4.75 billion. The transaction is expected to close by Q3 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. CoolIT has been supplying direct-to-chip cooling-based coolant distribution units, cold plates, and manifolds, serving hyperscale data centers and colocation operators as customers. This acquisition is a measure to address the high-heat and high-density server environments created by AI proliferation. Ecolab plans to combine its water management and digital monitoring capabilities with CoolIT's hardware technology to expand its data center cooling business.
