PTC Korea (Country Manager Kim Sang-gun) is embarking on the full-scale commercialization of smart connected power plant technology.

PTC Korea announced on the 29th that it has signed an MOU with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (President Jae-hoon Jeong) to promote strategic joint marketing of an automated predictive diagnostic system for facilities.

Since 2019, KHNP has embarked on the development of 24-hour condition monitoring and automatic predictive diagnosis technologies for major rotating equipment at 26 operating nuclear power plants in Korea, and has secured diagnostic models for over 14,000 pieces of equipment. Based on this, KEPCO established an Integrated Predictive Diagnostic (AIMD) Center and demonstrated its performance by detecting 22 equipment defects in advance during a pilot operation in 2021.

PTC’s industrial IoT platform ThingWorx and augmented reality platform Vuforia were applied to KEPCO’s automatic predictive diagnostic system.

PTC technology is being widely utilized as a foundation for operating a system that constantly checks safety conditions using various sensors such as vibration, heat, and cameras within power plant facilities, detects errors based on measured values, and enables rapid response to abnormal signs in facilities by utilizing AR/VR technology.

The automatic predictive diagnostic system utilizing big data and artificial intelligence based on IoT (Internet of Things) and AR (augmented reality) includes machine learning-based automatic condition diagnosis of rotating equipment, deep learning-based automatic condition diagnosis of thermal images of power equipment, and measurement data error judgment technology.

This is differentiated from existing products in the market as it is the world's largest IoT (Internet of Things) and AR (Augmented Reality)-based equipment predictive diagnostic model and an AI diagnostic model that can be widely utilized in power plant sites.

Through this MOU, both companies will pursue the full-scale technological commercialization of smart connected power plants. They agreed to extensively utilize PTC's global network and ecosystem to enable the application of an automated predictive diagnostic system, which detects and diagnoses signs of equipment abnormality in advance to prevent unexpected failures and minimize downtime, in various domestic and international environments.

Jeon Hye-soo, Head of the Digital Innovation Promotion Team at Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), stated, “This strategic technological cooperation with PTC Korea will create an environment for expanding commercialization channels for big data and AI-based predictive diagnostic technologies in domestic and international markets, and is expected to enhance KHNP’s global nuclear power export competitiveness.”
