Wonik Materials has succeeded in domestically producing difluoromethane (CH2F2), which is used in semiconductor etching, and is expected to improve profitability through future commercialization.

According to the industry, Wonik Materials recently announced that it has domestically produced CH2F2.

CH2F2 is a special gas used in semiconductor etching. It is not produced domestically and is a special gas that is entirely dependent on imports from overseas.

The exact production volume is unknown, but it is said to be enough to replace the existing quantity supplied as goods.

CH2F2, which has been successfully commercialized, is known to be in the testing phase, and the industry expects that full-scale supply will be possible next year.

It is expected that this localization will improve profitability and ensure stable domestic supply.

Before Wonik Materials localized it, there was no production facility for CH2F2 in Korea, and it is reported that Daikin Industries of Japan will produce it at a factory under construction in Dangjin to supply domestic special gases.

Meanwhile, Wonik Materials recorded sales of KRW 79.3 billion and operating profit of KRW 14.3 billion in the third quarter of 2021, achieving its highest quarterly sales ever. It is also expected to continue to break its record in the fourth quarter.

In addition, it is expected that the company will continue to post record-high performance next year due to increased sales of special gases resulting from NAND double stacking and unit increase, increased OLED production, and increased special gas prices resulting from an imbalance in the supply and demand of raw materials.
