[Editor's Note] The Creaform Contest 2021, a reverse engineering competition utilizing 3D scanners attempted for the first time this year, has come to a grand conclusion. The event is being praised for achieving two goals: going beyond a simple contest of reverse engineering skills to include equipment training, fostering experts, and discovering partners to collaborate with Creaform on marketing activities in 2022. Accordingly, this publication has arranged an interview with Kim Gun-ah, Head of the Creaform Business Division, who led the Creaform Contest 2021, to hear about the competition in detail.




■ The 'Creaform Contest 2021' has come to a grand conclusion. Please share your thoughts on the event.

It was a fairly large project with a significant amount of manpower and resources invested in it, as it was the first event of its kind in Korea. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who participated in the event, as well as to the staff and employees who organized it.

■ Please give a brief explanation of the 'Creaform Contest 2021' once again.

The contest is an event designed to discover partners to work with Creaform on marketing activities in 2022, and it was planned with the purpose of finding and developing influencers who will use the equipment firsthand and open up the market together on social media.

The contest proceeded in a format where a champion was selected from among the final candidates who passed all missions, consisting of a total of four stages of quests including marketing capabilities, scanning, mesh editing/reverse engineering, and dimensional measurement.

Each mission was planned and conducted jointly by Creaform’s technical team and 3D Systems, a leading reverse engineering SW platform company, and those who completed the technical training for each mission were also provided with the privilege of receiving a separate technical certification and certificate of completion.

The final winner will receive a PEEL2 CAD scanner worth 20 million won on loan for one year free of charge as an influencer called a PEEL3D Ambassador to carry out marketing activities. This is a program where you permanently own a scanner in recognition of your contribution after one year of influencer activity.

■ The overall evaluation of this contest is

Due to the COVID-19 crisis and busy year-end business conditions, the attendance rate for each mission was disappointing.

The offline training planned for each quest was technically deeper and more difficult than expected, so it seems it required a lot of time and effort for average office workers to handle.

However, the participants who made it to the final round were of the high caliber initially planned, and we were able to achieve the goal of the event by producing a satisfactory final project result.

■ The evaluation of participant training, which is one of the most important points of this contest, is

The training provided to the participants seems to have been well-structured, systematic, and beneficial.

It was a process of completing missions and building technical skills to prepare for future activities as an influencer, and it seems to have been a good opportunity for participants who did not win to learn skills that will be helpful in their work.

However, it remains a great pity that many participants who applied for the initial quests were unable to participate in more quests due to the tight schedule consisting mainly of offline training.

To overcome this, we plan to prepare online and offline training courses for next year's second contest so that many people can participate without restrictions on distance or time.

■ Are there any instances in this contest where the differentiation from other similar products was highlighted, given that the Peel 3D scanner was used?

The biggest advantage is the higher scanning autonomy compared to entry-level scanners in the same price range, allowing for various shapes and sizesThe fact that we were able to carry out missions targeting objects and produce accurate and flexible results based on powerful software.

For example, in a situation where the final results of 1, 2, and 3 had various curved surfaces and shapes and required reverse engineering of all surfaces, the flexible configuration and easy and simple setup of the PEEL3D scanner were of great help in performing the mission.

■ What are the selection criteria for the first-place participant, and if there are any special factors contributing to the winner's achievement, what are they?

I remember that among the participants, there were many who possessed high technical skills and the ability to freely express freeform surfaces.

The first-place winner had an approach and perspective tailored to the target audience of PEEL3D scanners, and also possessed strong marketing capabilities to achieve this.

Furthermore, the effort and capability to improve technical skills from a reverse engineering novice to the level of an expert user within the short duration of the contest can be considered the most outstanding aspect.

The first-place winner is planned to act as a Peel 3D ambassador. I am curious about how future activities will proceed and what the key promotional points are.

In the future, PEEL3D ambassadors will participate in various official events with Creaform, such as the 2022 Creaform Connect and Webinar, and will produce content and conduct social media promotions for the promotional activities of Creaform marketers. I have high expectations for you as you possess skills in various fields.

■ I would like to hear about future contest plans.

The next contests are the ACADEMIA Champion and the second PEEL contest, scheduled for the fall of 2022.

The Academia Champion is held for university club students nationwide who build cars and race in domestic self-made car competitions, and it appears to be a contest that determines the winner based on the best results achieved by applying scanners to direct design and measurement.

We plan to structure the second PEEL contest to allow for both online and offline training, striving to enable a diverse range of people to participate despite their busy daily lives.
