[Editor's Note] The Creaform Contest 2021, the first-ever reverse-engineering competition using 3D scanners, has concluded with a grand finale. Beyond a simple competition of reverse-engineering skills, the event also included equipment training, achieving a double benefit: fostering expert development and identifying partners to collaborate with Creaform on marketing initiatives in 2022. To this end, our magazine interviewed Lee Yoon-ho, winner of the Creaform Contest 2021, to hear his thoughts on the competition.




■ Please introduce yourself and explain why you are participating.

hello. My name is Lee Yun-ho and I run a unique workshop called 'Doksu Workshop' in Gwangmyeong-si, Gyeonggi-do, where I create and customize fun things like retro game consoles and plastic models.

Due to the nature of my work, I use 3D CAD and 3D printing a lot. I was imagining that I could do more sophisticated and diverse work by applying 3D scanning and reverse engineering, and I decided to participate in this contest at the recommendation of an acquaintance who actually uses the Peel 3D scanner to make products.

■ Please provide the topic and description of the final submission.

In the case of custom game consoles produced in the workshop, they are produced as a modern homage to retro game consoles from the 80s and 90s.

However, because the design is primarily mechanical, it can have many rigid aspects. I wanted to create something more unique by using characters and sculptures. To achieve this, I used a 3D scanner to scan figures, a practical method, to bring a twist to the mechanical game console's design.

I think the combination of your favorite characters on your favorite game console is even more special.

■ I won the grand prize at the 'Creaform Contest 2021'. What are your thoughts on winning?

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to Creaform, which hosted the contest, and to the contest organizers who provided both material and spiritual support for providing training in 3D scanning and reverse engineering, which are not easily accessible.

I am so grateful that I, a person with shortcomings, received such a grand prize. We are grateful for this new opportunity and will continue to strive to be a Doksu Gongbang that creates fun and enjoyable content.

■ What were the advantages of the Peel 3D scanner and software used in the contest?

I was amazed by the fast and precise scanning, which was different from what I generally knew about scanners, and it made me think again about their versatility.

I think it's the easiest 3D scanner to use, with its compact size and precise scanning capabilities.

This was my first exposure to various software, and it allowed me to quickly and accurately correct and modify scanned data, as well as reverse engineer and inspect it. I was also impressed by its compatibility with various CAD programs.

■ What I felt while participating in the contest

First of all, it was very helpful to be trained in reverse engineering and inspection processes that are not easily accessible.

By going through the 3D scanning and reverse engineering processes in order, I was able to understand the transition from the existing design process.

The instructors who conducted the training also answered many questions kindly and in an easy-to-understand manner, making the training even more rewarding.

■ If there is anything that needs improvement during the contest process

The training schedule was a bit tight, so it was difficult to participate. There were no other issues during the event, and participation was possible thanks to quick contact and action taken by the contest organizer.

■ I'm curious about your future plans.

I believe that creating something fun and memorable together is another value that Doksu Gongbang and I can create.

This contest has given me a new weapon, so I plan to create various works using the scanner and content related to 3D scanning.

We are preparing various activities to make 3D scanning, which is still unfamiliar to many people, more accessible, and are planning to incorporate it into various hobby fields.

We plan to utilize it in the fields of retro game consoles and plastic models, and to organize experiential learning on 3D scanning for middle and high school students.

We will continue to strive to be a Doksu Workshop that creates more fun and enjoyable content.
